The seminar is part of the research project "Imperialism, Nationalism, Xenophobia and Tolerance in Eastern Europe in the Twentieth and Twenty-First Centuries".
The event took place from November 3 to 5, 2020.
Organizers:
- NGO "Ukrainian Alliance";
- Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Faculty of Philosophy;
- Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (Friedrich Naumann Stiftung FÜR DIE FREIHEIT);
- Leibniz-Institut für Ost- und Südosteuropaforschung (Regensburg).
During the first day of the seminar, the participants - young civic activists, sociologists, historians and political scientists - got acquainted with the activities of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, the developments of the research project "Imperialism, Nationalism, Xenophobia and Tolerance in Eastern Europe in the XX-XXI Centuries" and the activities of the NGO "Ukrainian Alliance".
A meeting was held with Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Maryna Popatenko.
Professor Serhiy Petrovych Stelmakh spoke about the authoritarian and democratic tendencies of the Weimar Republic.
On November 4 and 5, the educational seminar "Practices of nation-building in multiethnic societies of Eastern Europe" was continued with the support of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation Ukraine and Belarus.
These days of the seminar were devoted to a simulation training "Liberal democratic society vs. totalitarian and authoritarian regimes" (speakers: Bohdan Skopenko and Sabina Kotova) and a discussion of the concept of "fascism" and its various applications outside Italy (speaker Andreas Umland). Dr. Andreas Umland's historically-oriented excursions constantly brought us into the present and forced us to discuss the productivity of "cultural nationalism" and the destructiveness of "radical nationalism."
On the final day of the seminar, Oleksiy Poltorakov presented social research of recent years on public opinion about the national security of Ukraine and conducted an interesting interactive session. Next, the participants visited the National Museum of History of Ukraine, where Bohdan Skopnenko gave an interesting tour, telling the story of Ukraine's national construction.
Finally, the participants exchanged views and summarized the results of the seminars.
